Bringing the Gospel to the Heart of Every Life at Memphis Union Mission

Since joining Memphis Union Mission in September, Dr. Jason Murphy has poured himself into the work of helping men facing homelessness and addiction discover a Christ-centered path forward. His primary role at the Mission is to share the hope of Christ with every man who walks through our doors. Each individual meets with him personally, and in these one-on-one conversations, he faithfully presents the Gospel.

As part of the pastoral team, Dr. Murphy also leads the Awareness Program, the first stage of our Iron-on-Iron discipleship process, ensuring that this Gospel foundation remains central as men take their first steps toward lasting recovery.

“For many, it’s the first time they’ve truly heard the Gospel,” he shares. “Seeing God move in someone’s heart is incredibly powerful.”

Beyond the initial meeting, Dr. Murphy continues these personal connections, walking alongside clients as they navigate the challenges of recovery and personal growth. “These one-on-one moments are so important,” he explains. “Everything we do here is Gospel-centered. It gives people hope and purpose, even in the midst of struggles with addiction, abuse, or homelessness.”

Chapel services, held morning and evening, provide another opportunity for clients to encounter Christ, while classes in discipleship help them apply biblical principles to daily life. At the Opportunity Center, new clients receive health screenings and can extend their stay for additional support. Dr. Murphy personally meets with every individual during this process, ensuring that the message of Christ remains at the heart of every step, right from the beginning.

“Even for those who don’t yet believe, they experience the compassion and principles of the Gospel,” Dr. Murphy says. “We want people to see that Christ’s love has the power to change lives, to restore hope, and to provide a path forward.”

For Dr. Murphy, the goal is clear: to keep Memphis Union Mission focused on a Gospel-centered message, showing men and women that Christ’s Word is not just a lesson, but a living guide for real-life challenges. “From the moment people walk in the door, they feel the Gospel alive here,” he notes. “It’s remarkable to see life restored, hope renewed, and the Body of Christ working together to bring transformation.”

Through intentional relationships, biblical teaching, and Christ-centered care, Dr. Jason Murphy and the pastoral team are helping hurting neighbors find not just recovery, but lasting change.
