Allan grew up in a Christian home, attending church and learning Scripture. When he became a teenager, he found friends that seemed to be having a whole lot more fun than he was. They attracted him. He left his church habits and home behind and went off with his new friends.
It wasn’t long before he was taking drugs frequently. Then one day, his eyes opened, and he saw the direction he was going. It wasn’t good. He needed to change.
“I prayed,” Allan says. “I asked God to give me a new opportunity and if I needed to leave my current surroundings, I would.” And leave he did. He quit his job and moved into a hotel until his money ran dry.
With nowhere to stay, Allan began walking, aiming for Nashville, but a certain stop along the way changed his life forever.
That stop was the Wright Transitional House of the Memphis Union Mission. He heard he could get a good night’s rest at the Mission and just happened to catch Pastor Rodgers walking out. The two talked, and Pastor Rodgers brought Allan to the intake center. After learning what Memphis Union Mission was really about, he realized this was the place God intended him to be.
Today, he stays at the Wright Transitional House and works to save money and strengthen his faith in Christ. “Every day the Lord teaches me and guides me. He teaches me patience and how to give my worries to Him.”
Allan dreams big. One day he hopes to own a construction and carpentry business. He wants to hire and teach others in a Christian environment and give back the knowledge Memphis Union Mission gave to him.
Because of your generosity and kindness, men like Allan find Christ and learn to live like Him. “The resources available to us here at Memphis Union Mission are the best I have seen,” says Allan. “I am so thankful for everyone who gives so generously. It is a rare and beautiful thing. I am so thankful I gave God a chance!”
